Ramnagar is a land of freedom-fighters. The people of Ramnagar played a not-worthy role in the country-'s freedom struggle. They took a very active part in the Salt Movement of Pichhabani and suffered untold hardship and sufferings at the hands of British rulers. However, the area was educationally backward and having no facility of higher education at the time of very inception of the college. This long-felt need was partly met with the setting up of Ramnagar College in 1972 by some eminent personalities and education-lovers of the locality. It is happy to note that this institution since the day of its inception has been serving the cause of higher education quiet successfully during last 42 years.
Let me take this opportunity to accord you warm welcome to Ramnagar College. The college owes its glorious birth to the sincere and active leadership of Late Sripati Charan Pradhan, the founder Principal who collected donation in cash and procured a land of 17 bighas from gracious and liberal local donors of whom Sripati Charan Pradhan himself and Late Prafulla Patra need a special mentioning. On this land, on the auspicious day of Rathajatra (02.07.1973), the foundation stone of this college was laid by Dr. S. N. Sen, the former V. C. of Calcutta University. Historically, however, Ramnagar College was founded on the 9th September, 1972 and within a short span of time it has made large impact by imparting higher education to a large number of aspiring youths of both Ramnagar I & II Blocks. At the same time by virtue of offering some job-oriented courses it has been successfully drawing attention of the students from far apart namely from the districts like Bankura, Purulia, South 24 Parganas and Paschim Medinipur.
The college aims at all-round development of the locality and its adjoining areas directly through spread of higher education and indirectly through participation in various socio-economic-cultural and welfare activities. The vision of this college is to create a class of intellectually, morally and spiritually sound and committed citizens, who will become a human resource of high caliber, to cater to the needs of the society and the country as a whole."
To provide qualitative and effective education to students coming from the poor and backward communities of the adjoining areas of Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia, South 24 Parganas of West Bengal and also the border areas of Odisha in the field higher education To provide students required technical and vocational teaching/training including general education to make them fit to get employment or self-employment.
To ensure that every level of the education system, all students make best use of the education services in line with their interest, aspirations and abilities; with the prin ciples of social justice and equality and opportunity.To provide academic and professional guidance to all concerned in educational planning, management and administration.
The college now offers 16 Honours programmes consisting of B. A. (Hons) course in 8 subjects and B. Sc. (Hons) in 7 subjects and B. Corn (Hons) in 1 subject. Besides the in-stitution also impart teaching in 3 general degree courses (B.A, B. Sc., and B. Corn). At the same time three highly job oriented courses namely B. Voc in Hospitality and Tourism Management and Fishery and Farm Management along with B. Sc (Major) in Industrial Fish and Fisheries that attract students from far apart.
Admission to first year B.S./B.Sc/B.Com classes will be done according to the norms of Vidyasagar University and this college. Admission will be done strictly on merit basis.

The College has a rich and useful library consisting of nearly 17,000 books, journals and a reading room where the students can read books during the college hours.
With a view to instinct a sense social service the college in different times has opened as many as four NSS units under the active leader-ship of Programme Officers Teachers.
